Amy Clipston Interview & GIVEAWAY!

 

 

How did you choose the genre that you write in?

I was always fascinated with the Amish when I was a child. I remember visiting Lancaster County when I was younger, and my father, who was a German immigrant, told me the Amish speak the same dialect of German as my relatives. I was drawn to their simplicity and faith. Due to my German heritage, I feel a loose connection to the culture. I was inspired by other Amish authors to try to write my own Amish stories.

 

Do you do an outline or do you just write?

I’m very organized. I start out with a synopsis, and after my editor approves it, I write a very detailed outline, going chapter by chapter, scene by scene. I use this as my road map when I’m writing. The story grows and changes, but I know where I’m headed. This helps prevent the dreaded writer’s block.

Who has been your favorite character to write and why?

 

In my Amish Heirloom series, my favorite character is Christopher Hochstetler, the hero from The Cherished Quilt, book three, which releases Nov. 29, 2016. Some books are easier to write than others, and this book pretty much wrote itself. The words flowed from my fingertips as soon as I figured out who the hero would be. Christopher came to life in my mind when I happened upon a photo of an actor (Griffin Freeman), who became my mental model for him.

I enjoyed writing his story because he has a very emotional backstory. He’s been through a very traumatic, life-changing event, and he needs a friend to help him. When he comes to Bird-in-Hand, he finds solace in his specialist friendship with Emily Fisher, the youngest of the Fisher sisters.

 

How long does it usually take to write a book? 

 

The first draft usually takes approximately one month. Then I spend approximately two weeks polishing the draft before I ask my mom and a friend to read it for me. After fixing any typos my mother and friend find, I go through the book once more before I submit it to my editor.

 

 

Have you ever woken up at night having to write something down for a book that you are working on? 

 

Yes, I have! I keep a notebook on my nightstand and I have had to turn on the light and write ideas down as they occur to me. I feel bad when I wake up my husband, but if I don’t write it down, I will forget it. I’ve heard Taylor Swift does this when she’s working on songs too, so I’m in good company.
